"Sigrid of Arlesdale" (originally "CoBoCo" and "Petit") is a diesel working on the Arlesdale Railway.

Bio

Sigrid of Arlesdale was built at Duffield Bank, Derbyshire by Sir Arthur Heywood in 1881 as Petit, a 0-6-0 narrow-gauge engine. In 1917, she was converted into a petrol engine with an odd-hut-like cab and a 2-6-2 wheel arrangement, and was named CoBoCo. She met her demise in 1928 after a collision, and the remains were left lying around at Murthwaite for many years. Before the line was sold in 1960, plans had been drawn up for a new diesel incorporating some parts of CoBoCo, and this was eventually completed by Severn-Lamb of Stratford-on-Avon in 1969.

When the new company took over in 1978, the frames were still lying , and they sent the chassis to be completed where she was given a twin-cab diesel with a Ford 4D engine and Linde Hydrostatic transmission, creating a Diesel Hydraulic locomotive. These were upgraded in 1975 with a Perkins 6/354 diesel, and replaced altogther in 1998, when she gained a Ford industrial engine with Spicer Compact Shuttle transmission, making her a Diesel Mechanical engine.

Sigird of Arlesdale arrived at Arlesdale Railway in 1986, and pulled the Royal Train at the former, and now carries a plaque commemorating this.

She has been seen on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway: her real-life counterpart, "Shelagh of Eskdale", is currently dressed up with a face to represent her at "Days Out with Thomas" events.

Sigrid of Arlesdale is named after the Sudrian heroine of the same name, who lived during the Dark Ages and helped sack the Normans. She is a general user engine.

Appearance

She has not appeared in the Railway Series, but was mentioned in "The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways".

Livery

Sigrid of Arlesdale is painted in a two-tone blue livery.

Basis

Sigrid of Arlesdale is based on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway's diesel engine, Shelgah of Eskdale.
