Emily is a Stirling Single tender engine. She use to live at Knapford Sheds, but when Tidmouth Sheds was rebuilt, she was transferred there to be with her new friends. Emily was transferred to the Black Loch route, after she was late with the flour train once too often. She proudly owns two coaches which match her glossy paintwork.
BioOn Emily's trial run she had to take some coaches, she pulled Annie and Clarabel by mistake and this offended Thomas. Later, Oliver told her they are Thomas' coaches and she went looking for Thomas, to apologize. On the way she met up with Oliver again, he had broken down on the cross-points and Thomas was heading towards him and couldn't stop. Emily bravely pushed Oliver out of the way just in time and preventing a nasty accident. The Fat Controller rewarded Emily with two new coaches, and hasn't pulled Annie and Clarabel since. Emily proved to be kind-hearted, and soon became popular among the engines.
In Summer, Emily was given the job of transporting flour, but James was unhappy with his job because of the landslides and "monster" rumored to be living in the Black Loch. Later, the Troublesome Trucks caused trouble for poor Emily and she accidently biffed them into a pond. The Fat Controller was very disappointed with Emily and transferred her to do James' work at the Black Loch. Emily was frightened at first but discovers that the "monster" is really a family of seals.
However, Emily became proven to be a nuisance and boss everyone about. She believed that she was "As Good as Gordon" and when Gordon was away on a important trip, Emily was chosen to pull the Express. She grew impatient, and sets off before the brake coach is coupled on. At Maithwaite, she had to wait for Bertie the bus, but Emily was so impatient she leaves, ironically just as Bertie pulls in. On the way, she rans out of water and James helps her to Brendam and Emily offers to take his slow goods train. She later meets Thomas at a signal, and proudly announces she is learning patience.
One night, a storm raged across Sodor and causes a lot of damage. In the morning, Emily was given an important job, and she became conceited. She grew cross of having to wait for the line to be clear, and started to boss everyone about. She soon met her match, Elizabeth refused to help push a broken water tower out of the way, because of Emily's rude attitude towards her. She realized that her bossiness isn't going to help her, and asks very nicely for Elizabeth to clear the tracks, which she does. Emily now knows it is best to say please and thank you.
Once, Emily took visitors to the ruined castle, where a queen once lived. Emily wanted to be a Queen and ordered Percy to shunt trucks. However, Mavis was on the same line and Percy crashed into her. Mavis and her trucks became derailed, and knock the telephone lines down, but then Toby crashed into the wreckage. Soon, the engines were back on the rails, though Toby's front cowcatcher is badly damaged. The Fat Controller was upset with Emily for causing trouble, but Emily learned her lesson by asking help from her friends!
Emily was given the special job of collecting Gordon's special coaches. However, Diesel got before Emily and tricked Thomas into giving him the special coaches. Emily was cross and went searching for Diesel, who started to feel sick. She soon finds Diesel, and Diesel tells Emily what happen. Diesel had stole the special coaches because he broke a record for shunting trucks and his motor was feeling sick. Later, Emily tells the Fat Controller what had happen to Diesel and at Gordon's ceremony Emily arrives with a brand new motor for Diesel!
Emily proved to be a really useful engine, and was ask to show a new engine called Whiff around Sodor. She was shocked to discover Whiff is scruffy and smelly and that the two are to collect rubbish trucks. Emily was teased for working with Whiff, and began to run away from him, but Whiff found her every time. She finally manages to lose Whiff, but she sees some rubbish trucks blocking Spencer, who refuses to move the trucks. Emily realises Whiff is the only one who can help, and the two pull the trucks away. Emily found out the Whiff was useful in his own way.
Emily is a hard worker and acts sisterly figure to the other engines. She is kind and friendly and always sensitive to the other engines' feelings. However, she tends to bossy which can make her difficult to work with at times. With advice from her friends, she is learning to be a "Really Useful Engine"!
Emily is a beautiful emerald green engine with shiny paintwork and gleaming brass fittings. She can be a little bossy and think she knows best, but is always ready to help a friend. She is the newest member of the "Steam Team".
Behind the ScenesEmily had two different scale of models in the television series. Emily's main model was Gauge One. It was able to blow smoke from its funnel and had over 20 faces, which were removable. She was Radio Controlled, given moving eyes and had two large wheels. Over the years new models have been made to replace the old ones. One of Emily's models is currently on display in Canada at Nitrogen Studios.
In order to interact with the large scale people, a large scale version of Emily had been made since Season 7. It usually was featured in close-up scenes of Emily's Cab, Emily's Crew and Emily's Whistle.
BasisEmily is based on a GNR G Stirling Single, of which there is only one left in the world, located at the National Railway Museum in York.
Emily is painted in the emerald livery of the Great Northern Railway, with gold lining, chocolate running-boards and gleaming brass fittings.
