1020 was a black mixed-traffic tender engine who once worked on the London and North Eastern Railway.

Biography

1020 was built at Stratford Works to a design by Thomas W. Worsdell. He worked on the Great Eastern Railway and later the London and North Eastern Railway, along with many other engines. When Toby was visiting a seaside branch line, he saw 1020 struggling with a load of trucks and offered to help him. The grateful engine told Toby about the festival.[1]

Personality

Despite being dirty and badly maintained and suffering from steam leaks which made it hard for him to pull trains, 1020 seemed to have a bit of an optimistic side to him.

Technical Details

Basis

1020 is based on a Great Eastern Railway Class Y14 0-6-0 mixed-traffic tender engine, later classified as J15 by the London and North Eastern Railway. His number was fictional as no J15s carried the number 1020. Only one member of the class, number 564/7564/65462 was preserved. It is owned by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society and resides on the North Norfolk Railway

Livery

1020 is painted in the London and North Eastern Railway's mixed-traffic livery of unlined black with his number (1020) painted on the sides of his cab in yellow and his company's initials (LNER) painted on the sides of his tender, also in yellow. His buffer beams are painted red. His paintwork is weathered due to him being badly maintained.

Trivia

  • In The Railway Series book, Toby, Trucks and Trouble, the text in "Toby's Seaside Holiday" states that 1020 is younger than Toby, however the J15s were built from 1883 up to 1913 and Toby was built in 1914, meaning 1020 would be older than Toby.
