“Surely a big engine like you can take a little joke!”
― Percy to Gordon

Letting off Steam! is a magazine story.

Plot

One day, Percy greets Oliver as he is filling trucks with coal at the Main Station yard.. However, the coal chute is too noisy, so Percy decides to get his attention by letting off steam. The loud hissing startles him, which Percy finds to be very funny.

Despite Oliver telling him not to blow off steam like that again, Percy then sneaks up to Gordon as he prepares to take the express. As he hisses steam loudly again, Gordon is so surprised that he bumps into the coaches. Soon, Percy proceeds to surprise Duck, Thomas and Henry, with the engines trying to figure out how to get him to stop.

Thomas suddenly gets an idea as he sees Daisy returning to the yard. Since she is a diesel engine, she could move more quietly than Thomas, who asks if she could help stop Percy's tricks. As Daisy hides behind the engine sheds, Percy rolls up to Thomas and blows steam loudly at him. However, Daisy comes up silently behind him, startling Percy with her whistle. Percy then learns promises to never startle anyone with his steam again.
