- “Thank you, trap points! You can stay there, just as long as you like!”
- ― Henry, relieved after his near miss with Gordon
Near Miss is the first story in the 1991 Annual.
Plot
Henry grumbles about the trap-points outside the engine shed that are there to derail runaways that would otherwise collide with trains on the Main Line. The next day, a meddling firelighter fiddles with his controls, causing Henry to start moving. He smashes through the shed doors and rolls out into the yard. Henry closes his eyes and fears the worst when he sees Gordon charging towards him. But fortunately, he is switched to the trap-points and Gordon narrowly misses him. Now Henry knows trap-points have their uses after all.
