The Shunter is responsible for coupling and uncoupling engines from trains, using a long pole with a hook on the end, called a shunter's pole. When there is no shunter around, firemen or workmen usually do the job.

Uniform

A North Western Railway shunter's uniform consists of blue trousers, a black tie, a white shirt, a blue jacket, with brown overalls and either a brown cap or hardhat, identical to the uniform of a standard workman.

Trivia

  • Despite the shunters use a shunter’s pole to couple and uncouple engines and rolling stock, in reality this is practice that is slowly obsolete as shunters would hold the coupling chain and slip them on the draw hook.
    • Practically because shunter’s pole was withdrawn during BR days in 1950s
