The Big Freeze is the fourteenth episode from the twenty-first season.

Cold weather stops a delivery of coal arriving on Sodor, so the Fat Controller orders all engines to stay in their sheds. Thomas, however, thinks he has enough coal for one more run, but he gets stranded in the snow whilst the diesels take over the steam engine's jobs to keep the railway running.

  • Joseph May as Thomas
  • William Hope as Edward and Toby
  • Kerry Shale as Henry, Gordon and Diesel
  • Rob Rackstraw as James and a Signalman
  • Christopher Ragland as Percy
  • Jules de Jongh as Emily
  • Steven Kynman as Paxton and Dart
  • Bob Golding as Sidney
  • Keith Wickham as Den, Bertie and Sir Topham Hatt

  • Going by production order, this is the fifteenth episode of the twenty-first season.
  • Annie and Clarabel sing a Christmas carol, We Three Kings.
  • At Tidmouth Sheds, when the Fat Controller says to the engines "Let's be careful out there.", it is a reference to the famous catchphrase from the TV series 'Hill Street Blues'.
  • This is the second episode where every member of the Steam Team speaks, the first being the nineteenth season episode, The Truth About Toby.
  • When Diesel slows down and comes to a stop, a bump sound effect originally used in Seasons 4-7 can be heard.
  • Sound effects from Emily in the Middle are reused in this episode.
  • Carly is absent from her gantry rails at Brendam Docks, meaning that this episode probably took place before Cranky at the End of the Line.

  • Den and Dart have 'Arry and Bert's horns when they and Sidney arrive at Kellsthorpe with the express.
  • Thomas is not emitting steam at the end.
  • Throughout the episode, Henry is missing his brake pipe and lamp irons.
