“Goodness! You're a real messy buffers!”
― Madge to Skarloey

Wash Behind Your Buffers is the twenty-third episode of the eleventh series.

Plot

There is to be an Engine Rally and Country Show, and Rheneas and Skarloey are to lead the rally. The Thin Controller asks Madge to deliver brushes and soap to make sure the two engines are clean for the event while making sure she is cleaned herself as she is pulling the brass band. She starts with Rheneas who had been working at the coal mines and she advises him on how to get clean. Once he is, Madge goes to see Skarloey but becomes very muddy while driving along the mountain roads.

Madge finds Skarloey who is just as dirty from working at the quarry and also advises him on how to get clean. Unfortunately, Madge has spent too much time making sure they are clean that she does not have time to get clean herself. While the Thin Controller is inspecting Skarloey and Rheneas, Madge arrives at the rally filthy and attempts to get cleaned. Unfortunately, she accidentally sprays mud all over Rheneas and Skarloey. However, the workmen begin cleaning them up again and the two engines return the favour by instructing the workmen to give Madge her washdown. Skarloey and Rheneas are soon cleaned as well in time for the rally to begin.

Trivia

  • Going by production order, this is the twentieth episode of the eleventh series.
  • The opening shot of the episode uses an alternate angle from the Engines and Escapades opening.
  • This episode's title is based on the saying, "Wash behind your ears."
  • This episode marks the last of a few things:
    • Madge's final episode with a leading role.
    • Madge and Elizabeth's last appearances in an episode.
    • The last eleventh series episode released in the US.
  • New clean models for Skarloey and Rheneas were built for this episode, as the original large-scale models have been weathered over the years to the point that it would be impossible to give the models a shiny and clean livery that was needed for this episode. The models shared the same chassis as the original body shells did and were swapped between during filming.
  • This is the only episode where Elizabeth appears but does not speak.
  • Madge's tongue was edited out in one scene of some releases.

Goofs

  • Madge is carrying the brushes and soap when she goes over the hill at the beginning of the episode.
  • Skarloey is wearing Rheneas' happy face in all of the shots at the quarry.
  • After Madge leaves Skarloey, the road she is on bounces up and down.
  • When Madge sprays mud onto Skarloey and Rheneas' faces, their eyes are covered with mud. But in the next shot, their eyes are clean.
  • When Skarloey is having his washdown, his trailing wheels are floating.
